To achieve a younger look, we often think about how we apply makeup, the products we use, and the best ways to look after our skin.
But when we want to apply makeup to de-age our skin, we need to follow some fundamental basics.
Makeup artist and co-founder of Ella & Jo, Charlene Flanagan explained the makeup hack which is glaringly obvious to people but often overlooked.
Charlene said that dirty makeup brushes are impacting your anti-ageing makeup routine and keeping your brushes clean is essential.

She advised: “Dirty brushes accumulate oils, old makeup and bacteria, which can affect how fresh makeup is applied and worn throughout the day.
“Product buildup can lead to uneven application, resulting in patchy areas and thick layers that are more prone to settling into fine lines.”
Once your brushes are poised and you are ready to start applying makeup to your face, it is important that you also prepare your skin so it is not too dry.
Beauty expert and tester at Oriflame, Helen Bee shared the importance for older women to prepare their skin before applying makeup.
She said: “Proper skin preparation is a must for anyone applying makeup, but it becomes even more vital for women over 40.
“Prepping should be part of both your morning and evening routines, as neglecting it can lead to dry skin, making foundation appear chalky and uneven, or too oily if the wrong products are used.
“Use a moisturiser that works to activate and boost the skin barrier’s overnight repair and recovery functions to target multiple signs of ageing, reducing fine lines and wrinkles and revealing firmer, smoother, more radiant, and youthful-looking skin.”
Something that often gets bypassed is exfoliating your skin, with many people ignoring this key tip believing it is not essential.

Helen said: “Regular use of an exfoliator helps remove the build-up of dead skin cells that can make your skin appear dull and tired, while also preventing your complexion products from performing at their best.
“Exfoliating not only minimises issues like dry patches but also keeps your skin smooth and glowing. Without regular exfoliation, your skin may look uneven and lacklustre, with an increased risk of acne breakouts.
“Starting with a gentle yet effective exfoliator is a great way to keep your skin healthy, radiant and looking younger.”
Another top tip from the beauty expert is keeping your lips moisturised.
The expert recommended: “To keep our lips moisturised, gently coating them regularly with a hydrating balm. A regular use of lip balm will leave them feeling soft, smooth, supple and youthful.
“Smooth on the balm in the morning, evening and throughout the day as needed for maximum benefits.
“Balms are also great to use on not only dry lips but skin or patches on cuticles, hands, eyebrows, elbows and feet.”
