A person has died and another has been injured after a train crashed into a car at a level crossing on Tuesday.

British Transport Police was called to reports of a collision between the two vehicles in Ely, Cambridgeshire, at around 10.15am on March 3.

Emergency services rushed to the Dimmocks Cote level crossing on the A1123 Newmarket Road in Stretham.

One individual was pronounced dead at the scene, while another was treated for minor injuries.

Police are now investigating the incident and have urged any witnesses to come forward.

The crossing is said to be fitted with warning lights, an alarm, and a physical barrier to prevent cars from entering the tracks when a train is crossing.

A spokesman for BTP said: “BTP were called at around 10.15am this morning to reports of a collision involving a train and a car at Dimmocks Cote level crossing in Ely.

“Officers responded alongside paramedics and sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene.

“Enquiries are ongoing to identify the person and inform their next of kin. Another person is receiving treatment for minor injuries.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what happened, any witnesses who haven’t already spoken to police are asked to text BTP on 61016 quoting the reference 198 of March 3.”

Meanwhile, National Rail has warned passengers of “major” travel disruption in the area throughout the afternoon.

They said the lines between Waterbeach and Ely are closed, and no trains are running between Cambridge North and Ely.

“Major disruption is expected until approximately 4pm,” a National Rail spokesman said.

National Rail added a “limited” service of rail replacement buses have been made available, with journeys expected to be “at least 60 minutes longer than usual”.

The A1123 was also blocked in both directions following the incident.

CrossCountry, operating the train at the centre of the collision, said their priority was “the safety of colleagues” and they are “working with emergency services and Network Rail to manage the situation safely and support those on board”.

It has also advised passengers to check their journeys if they are travelling today.
