Stockport County have signed goalkeeper Oliver Whatmuff on a season-long loan deal from Premier League side Manchester City.

The 18-year-old joins having played under Hatters boss Jimmy McNulty during his time with Rochdale last season.

He played in 38 National League games last term and kept 18 clean sheets as the club fell just short of the league title but then went on to achieve promotion back to the English Football League through the play-offs.

In the promotion final, he saved two spot-kicks as Rochdale beat Boreham Wood at Wembley, capping off a remarkable debut season in senior football.

“Before working with him at my previous club, I believed he was an elite goalkeeper, and now after working with him for the season, that belief has only grown,” boss McNulty said.

“He’s a super talent, with a blend of attributes both in and out of possession which will really help the team. But what stands out even more is his mindset. He’s a winner. His mentality is way beyond his years. That’s what excites me about him the most.
