A woman has died and a man has been seriously injured in a hit-and-run in north Belfast.

Pedestrian Raven Adams, 24, from Tipperary, was hit by the vehicle in York Street at about 02:40 BST on Thursday.

Emergency services attended and she was pronounced dead at the scene. A 22-year-old male pedestrian was also seriously injured and taken to hospital.

The driver of the vehicle, a 22-year-old man who fled the scene, was later arrested in Cavehill, and remains in custody.

Road closures on the Limestone Road, North Queen Street, Mountcollyer Avenue and York Street have since ended, and police have left the scene.

Phillip Brett, an assembly member for North Belfast, said he was “deeply saddened” to hear that Raven Adams had “tragically lost her life”.

“My heartfelt condolences are with Raven’s family, friends and loved ones as they come to terms with this devastating loss.”

Speaking about the 22-year-old man who sustained serious injuries in the collision, Brett said: “My thoughts and prayers are with him, and I wish him strength and a full recovery.”

Brett paid tributes to the emergency services who attended the scene, adding: “This is an incredibly sad day for our community. I would ask everyone to respect the privacy of those affected and allow the PSNI the time and space to carry out a full and thorough investigation.”
