Queen Camilla attended the White House state dinner alongside King Charles without donning a tiara, departing from traditional royal headwear for the formal occasion.

The 78-year-old Queen selected a deep pink evening gown designed by British couturier Fiona Clare for the event hosted by President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.

Rather than a crown jewel, she accessorised with an amethyst and diamond necklace boasting considerable royal heritage.

The piece was originally presented to Queen Victoria by a former Duchess of Kent before passing to Queen Mary.

Matching earrings and a silver clutch completed her ensemble for the diplomatic gathering.

The late Queen Elizabeth took a different approach during her final American state visit in May 2007.

For that White House dinner hosted by President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, she chose the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.

This particular piece carries substantial historical significance, having been gifted to the Duchess of York, later Queen Mary, as a wedding present in 1893.

According to the Royal Collection Trust, Lady Eva Greville spearheaded the fundraising campaign for the tiara, which was acquired from Garrard.

The collection effort proved so successful that surplus funds were donated to the families of sailors who perished in the HMS Victoria collision.

Queen Camilla has previously foregone tiaras at significant state occasions abroad.

During the 2023 state visit to Kenya, she opted against wearing one, potentially to sidestep controversy around displaying symbols of monarchy in a former British colony.

She similarly chose not to wear a tiara during a French state visit that same year.

The current American trip marks King Charles and Queen Camilla’s inaugural state visit to the United States since his accession to the throne in 2022.

Their itinerary encompasses Washington DC, New York City and Virginia, including a block party commemorating the 250th anniversary of American independence being celebrated this year.
