Motorists can save thousands of pounds on a British-made zero emission vehicle thanks to an extension of Labour’s Electric Car Grant.
The new Nissan Leaf now qualifies for the maximum £3,750 Electric Car Grant in a major boost to British manufacturing and the brand’s Sunderland plant.
Drivers can save thousands of pounds on the new electric vehicle when the offer goes live in December at a starting price of £32,249.
The 75kWh Leaf has a staggering battery range of 386 miles on a single charge, with a second model offering a 52kWh battery and 271-mile range.
Production of the latest Leaf model will begin in Sunderland next month, with Nissan hoping to begin customer deliveries in February.
Four variants of the Nissan Leaf 75kWh vehicle will be eligible for the Electric Car Grant, including the Engage, Engage+, Advance and Evolve.
Nissan’s Sunderland plant is backed by 6,000 workers, with the Department for Transport highlighting the job creation and growth in the North West of England.
James Taylor, managing director of Nissan GB, said the manufacturer was “absolutely delighted” with the addition of the Leaf in the Electric Car Grant.

He continued, saying that the “best” aspect of the Leaf is that it’s built in the UK, further reducing costs for British motorists.
“This is fantastic news for people looking to switch to fully electric motoring as they now have the reassurance that comes from a car with up to 386 miles of range, all the tech they could want and the real-world benefits that come from Nissan’s 15 years of EV expertise,” Mr Taylor said.
The Leaf was the world’s first mass-market electric car, with the Japanese automaker selling almost 700,000 worldwide since its launch in 2010.
The third-generation model has been redesigned and re-engineered to meet the needs of modern electric car drivers.

Motorists can benefit from energy consumption as low as 4.5 miles per kWh, while 150kW DC fast charging covers up to 273 miles in just 30 minutes.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: “Nissan helped pioneer early EV ownership through the original Leaf, so it is great to see them join our drive to make going electric cheaper and more accessible for families.
“Alongside saving drivers thousands, this news is also a big boost for manufacturing in the North East – supporting thousands of jobs in the region whilst backing the industry to grow and deliver our Plan for Change.”
So far this year, Nissan has sold more than 77,000 vehicles, representing an impressive 4.51 per cent of the total market share.
