Manchester City have signed England international Niamh Charles for £500,000 from Women’s Super League rivals Chelsea.

The left-back joins on a three-year deal after six years with the Stamford Bridge club, where she made 173 appearances.

Charles, 27, won five WSL titles, four FA Cups and three League Cups with Chelsea.

She was also part of the squad, under former manager Emma Hayes, that lost the Women’s Champions League final in 2021 to Barcelona.

“I’m really happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started,” said Charles, who started her career at Liverpool.

“I’ve seen from the outside and have obviously played against City over the past few years, and they had great success this year.

“What they’re building as a team is something I wanted to be a part of. It’s the perfect fit and hopefully we can have some good times together.”

Her departure from Chelsea coincides with the arrival of Republic of Ireland international Katie McCabe, who joined from Arsenal.

Charles provides vital WSL and Women’s Champions League experience for City, while the England defender is looking to gain regular game time to cement her place in Sarina Wiegman’s squad for next year’s World Cup.

She has 34 caps for the Lionesses and netted a penalty in the shootout victory over Spain in the Euro 2025 final.

Charles replaces Spain full-back Leila Ouahabi, who left City for Chicago Stars FC, and will wear the number 21 shirt.

City won their first WSL title in a decade in May and are adding squad depth in the transfer window as they look to challenge in Europe.

They have already completed the signing of England forward Beth Mead, who left Arsenal at the end of the season.

Crucially, City’s top scorer Khadija Shaw signed a new four-year deal in May, just days after it looked like she would be leaving on a free.

City’s director of football Therese Sjogran said: “To add a player of Niamh’s ability and experience to our squad after the success of last season is a huge positive.

“We’re all excited to see what she can bring and despite everything she’s already achieved in the game, we firmly believe her best years are still to come.

“She has the drive to become a better player every day and also challenge her team-mates to do the same.”
