A murderer sentenced to 15 years in prison is on the run as police issue an urgent appeal.

Convicted killer Gary Anderson has remained at large despite official pleas for the criminal to return to prison earlier this week.

Anderson, 29, was jailed for life after he and his brother murdered Karol Kelly in Londonderry back in 2018.

The killer, who was granted ompassionate temporary release (CTR) to attend his father’s funeral, failed to return on Monday.

Prison officials raised concerns over granting the release ahead of freeing the prisoner.

At first, the prison service refused Anderson’s request, but the court overturned the ban at the 11th-hour on Sunday.

Five days on from the original plea, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said Anderson was last spotted on Monday morning in the Eastway area of Creggan in Derry around 11am.

Anderson’s father’s funeral took place St Mary’s Church in the Creggan area in Derry. He was later cremated in Letterkenny, County Donegal, in the afternoon.

Despite having a court-approved civilian chaperone, Anderson was able to abscond and extend his release from Maghaberry Prison.

Earlier this week on Wednesday, the Office of the Lady Chief Justice (LCJ) said the court held the refusal to grant CTR was “not substantiated by the evidence provided to the court”.
