Multiple people have died in a car accident involving a police vehicle and a VW Passat on the A66, Cleveland Police has confirmed.
The fatal car crash occurred at 3.39am near South Bank on the A66 this morning.
Earlier in the morning, the police confirmed the A66 was closed in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane.
A Cleveland Police spokesman: “Around 3:39am this morning, a collision took place involving a police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat on the A66 in South Bank.
“Sadly, the collision has resulted in multiple fatalities.
“There are significant emergency vehicles on the scene, and the road will remain closed for some time.
“The public are asked to use alternative routes.
“We are working to identify the victims and contact their families. This is a quickly evolving incident and we ask that members of the public respectfully avoid speculation.”

The A66 remains closed in both directions as emergency services remain on the scene.
There is currently no official information as to whether the police vehicle was responding to an emergency, pursuing the VW or otherwise connected to the Passat before the crash.
