‘Muhammad’ tops list of baby names in England and Wales for second year running

ONS released its list on Thursday morning with its top 100 baby names for both boys and girls in England and Wales for 2024.

Olivia has topped the list for the girls, keeping the top ranking ever since it overtook Amelia – now sitting in second – in 2016.

The names rounding out the top 10, in order, for the boys include Noah, Oliver, Arthur, Leo, George, Luca, Theodore, Oscar and Archie.

As for the girls, Amelia comes in second, Lily, Isla, Ivy, Florence, Freya, Poppy, Ava and Elsie in spot 10.

ONS data shows there were 594,540 live births in England and Wales for 2024, with 289,651 females and 304,889 males.

It resulted in 35,386 unique girls’ names and 30,546 unique boys’ names.

Muhammad takes the top spot for the boys and Olivia takes top spot for the girls

ONS said: “These statistics are based on the exact spelling of the first name on the birth certificate.”

“Similar names with different spellings are counted separately and not grouped.”

While Muhammad tops the boys’ names, the same name but spelt “Mohammed” is comes in at 21st.

Similarly, Mohammad is in 53rd place, meaning the name itself appears three different times in the top 100.
