Millions of older people across the UK will receive financial support to help with rising energy costs this winter.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has begun sending out automatic payments worth up to £300 to eligible state pensioners.

The support is being provided through the Government’s Winter Fuel Payment scheme, which is expected to reach around nine million people.

Payments began at the start of November and will continue into December, meaning some pensioners may already have received the money while others will get it in the coming weeks.

This year’s rollout is larger than last winter’s, after the Government was criticised for leaving many pensioners out of the scheme.

Pensioners in England and Wales who were born before 22 September 1959 will qualify for the payments, provided their annual income falls below £35,000.

The government has established this income threshold as part of the revised eligibility criteria for the 2025 scheme.

Recipients must have met specific circumstances during the qualifying week, which ran from 15 to 21 September 2025.

Those earning above the £35,000 limit will not receive the winter support, marking a clear boundary for the expanded programme.

The age requirement means beneficiaries must be at least 66 years old to qualify for this financial assistance.

The amount pensioners receive varies between £100 and £300, determined by their date of birth and individual circumstances during the qualifying period in mid-September.

The payments are being transferred directly into bank accounts, with the distribution process spanning both November and December.

This staggered approach means recipients should not be concerned if they haven’t yet received their payment, as the DWP continues processing transfers throughout the two-month period.

The Winter Fuel Payment aims to assist older people with heating expenses during the colder months, providing crucial financial support when energy costs typically rise.

The government reformed the Winter Fuel Payment system after facing widespread backlash over last year’s restrictive approach, which left millions of vulnerable pensioners without support.

The expansion means significantly more pensioners now qualify compared to the previous year

Under the revised arrangements, all pensioners will automatically receive their payments before HM Revenue and Customs subsequently reclaims money from those who exceed the income threshold.

This new mechanism ensures eligible recipients aren’t delayed in receiving their support whilst the verification process takes place.

The expansion means significantly more pensioners now qualify compared to the previous year, addressing concerns that the earlier scheme had excluded too many older people who needed help with heating costs.
