Oldham Athletic boss Micky Mellon says he is very satisfied with their strong start to the new season.

The Latics have taken seven points from their opening four matches, and they are fifth in the early League Two table.

“We believe we should have more points, but on the flipside of that we’re in a good position,” Mellon told Radio Manchester.

“It’s been a good start to the season, but no complacency. We have to keep working hard and find ways to improve, and find that consistency”.

Oldham returned to the EFL via the National League play-offs under Mellon in 2023-2024, before finishing 10th in League Two last term.

They added a dozen new players in the summer transfer window, with 11 free transfers and one loan signing.

Mellon is ready to try and improve their results still further this season.

“We’ve built a squad that we think will do well for us,” he added.

“We’ve got good players, some who can do more, but that’s only to be expected at this stage.

“We’ve also got some players who I expect to get themselves into the starting 11 over time. This is the group that we have, so we have to keep working with them and try and get the best out of them.”

Saturday sees Mellon make the latest return to his former club Tranmere Rovers where he won back-to-back promotions in 2018 and 2019.

“Genuinely I do enjoy going back,” he added.

“But it’s not about me. I’m not playing. It’s only about picking up three valuable points for Oldham.”

Tranmere have also made a strong start under new manager Darrell Clarke who did his coaching badges with Mellon.

The Birkenhead-based club are yet to lose in the league, winning one and drawing three of their opening four matches.
