Watch the tense exchange between Michelle Dewberry and a Labour minister as the pair locked horns on women’s safety in Britain.

Justice Minister and MP for Rother Valley Jake Richards joined the People’s Channel after analysis showed that foreign criminals are being deported in a bid to free up space in prisons up and down the country.

The presenter put it to the minister that “many viewers feel Labour is putting women and girls at risk in the country”.

But Mr Richards was quick to insist that Labour “takes police advice very seriously in relation to the small boat crisis”, citing the Home Secretary’s sweeping overhaul of asylum legislation last month.

He added: “We’ve got to try and clamp down on that small boat crisis.

“Today, the other news, Michelle, is that this Government has now deported more foreign national offenders than ever before.”

But Michelle was not satisfied with his response, interjecting: “And most of them have gone off their own accord, and many of them, we’ve had to pay for the privilege.”

Mr Richards hit back, adding: “Sorry to interrupt, but, Michelle, you say pay for the privilege.

“What I don’t want to do, Michelle, is have people who come to our country commit offences, and we end up having to pay for them to serve time in prison.

“Where we can, we should be getting them out of the country and return them to where they came from. And that’s what this Government is doing.”

Citing a 74 per cent jump on Conservative figures last year, he added: “We’ll continue to do that with more measures to make it easier and quicker to get rid of foreign national offenders coming into Parliament next year.”

But Michelle, again, did not seem satisifed, firing back: “My viewers and I don’t really care about the Conservatives and what they did to us. They’re gone.

“What my viewers care about is the fact that, as a woman, as a parent who has… I don’t know why you’re laughing because it’s not funny.

“When you’ve got teenage girls that cannot even go to the park with their friends without being snatched away from their friends and sexually assaulted in bushes, when you’ve got 17-year-old girls that can’t even walk the streets without a random Sudanese guy trying to snatch them off the street.

“The CCTV footage that we saw recently, my viewers are absolutely terrified for their own safety, for their children’s safety, and for their grandchildren’s safety.”

On Monday, it was revealed that bus passengers were forced to intervene to prevent a 17-year-old girl being kidnapped by a Sudanese migrant.

Abdulmawal Ibrahim Adam, 28, was subsequently thrown behind bars for four years and one month after admitting trying to kidnap the teen in Swindon.

“What do you say to those viewers who feel very strongly that your Government and the previous one is directly putting us British citizens at risk?” Michelle asked.

In response, Mr Richards admitted that more must be done to tackle violence against women and girls, a strategy which will be unveiled in Parliament this week.

He told Michelle: “The Government will be setting out a really radical strategy to deal with that to halve violence against women and girls over the next decade.

“And that’s a really important part of this Government’s ambition.

“We’ve got to get more police on the streets to make sure that people do not feel unsafe in parks or at night, but they are recruiting 13,000 more police officers.

“Michelle, I know that people, too many people, feel unsafe in their communities, and we’re trying to take action to deal with that.”
