The Met Office has issued an urgent yellow weather alert for fog, warning Britons that journey times this morning will be affected.

The warning was issued at 3.27am on Monday, and is expected to continue into the morning.

Dense fog is expected in certain areas, especially across East Anglia where visibility could fall to 50 metres in places.

According to the Met Office, “fog that has developed through Sunday night is expected to persist through the Monday morning travel period” so delays are expected.

People have been advised to leave extra time if driving this morning, and to check for updates on bus and train services.

Ferry travel may also be affected, and there is a chance of delays or cancellations to flights.

The following areas are expected to be the worst affected:

East of England:

  • Cambridgeshire
  • Essex
  • Hertfordshire
  • Norfolk
  • Southend-on-Sea
  • Suffolk
  • Thurrock

London and Southeast:

  • East Sussex
  • Greater London
  • Kent
  • Medway
  • Surrey
  • East Sussex

The Met Office said: “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, leaving extra journey time, or amending plans if necessary.

“Make sure you know how to switch on your fog lights, and check they are working before setting off on your journey.

WEATHER – LATEST UPDATES:

“Bus and train services, as well as flights and ferry travel may also be affected; check for updates from your travel company and follow their advice.”

Elsewhere in the country, frost is expected for some in rural Scotland, northern England and Wales.

Throughout the morning, the fog will clear and a fine day is expected to follow with lots of sunshine, although it may remain hazy at times.

The northwest is expected to be cloudier with outbreaks of rain in western Scotland and brisk winds.

Tonight is expected to be chilly with patches of fog returning, although not as densely as this morning.
