A student police officer with Greater Manchester Police has been charged with rape, kidnap, strangulation and three more offences.

Mohammad Hassan, 23, was charged late on Monday night after being arrested on Saturday evening following a police chase on the M62.

GMP said the force had received a 999 call that evening “where a woman could be heard in distress in a vehicle”.

Mr Hassan, whom GMP noted was of Asian-Pakistani ethnicity, was off-duty at the time and driving his own car when he was arrested in West Yorkshire.

He has since been remanded in custody and has been suspended by the force.

The 23-year-old is now due to appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court today accused of six offences in total.

These are oral rape, kidnap, strangulation, sexual assault, phone theft and dangerous driving.

Police said a woman was “safeguarded” at the scene, meaning officers ensured she was physically safe from a suspect or dangerous environment.

She continues to be supported by specialist officers and support services, the force added.

Greater Manchester Police’s Assistant Chief Constable Mark Dexter said: “GMP detectives and staff have been working on this investigation throughout the last 48 hours to ensure charges are brought in this case.

“The victim is our priority, and we are ensuring she continues to receive specialist support.

“Criminal proceedings must now take its course without interference.

“I understand, and share, the feeling among the public and our thousands of hard-working, decent staff who will have seen this news.

“Proceedings are underway and necessary action will be decisively taken within the regulations.”
