Manchester’s network of green trails has been relaunched in the hope of getting more residents walking.

There are new online maps and posters highlighting 15 routes which link up parks, green spaces and waterways across the city.

The revamp was necessary after some of the paths, routes and trails had changed over the years.

The 15 trails throughout the area were originally launched in 2012 and updated in 2018 before this latest update.

Salle Dare from the Manchester and Salford Ramblers Association said: “We’re trying to get people out into the open air and into nature but without having to go a long distance say right out into the Peak District or into North Wales.

“You can actually do good walking on your doorstep.”

Walkers could follow the routes on their own or join up with any of the local walking groups as most rambling groups had options for different distances or difficulties.

Ms Dare added; “You make good friends doing that and you don’t need any special gear. A decent comfortable pair of shoes and a raincoat and you’re off.”

The Green Trail is a partnership project between The Ramblers, Manchester City Council, Transport for Greater Manchester and Manchester Active.

Councillor Lee-Ann Igbon, Executive Member for Vibrant Neighbourhoods, said: “In a city as big as Manchester finding areas of green space can be incredibly important for our overall wellbeing.

“The relaunch of our rambling trails with new and improved maps and information will be very beneficial for people who want to get out and about, and perhaps discover some of Manchester’s hidden gems.

“I’d like to thank our colleagues at Manchester Active and TfGM for their support in this endeavour, as well as the Manchester and Salford Ramblers for their tireless passion for the outdoors, and their drive to make these trails accessible for everyone.”
