The cause of death of a man who died on the grounds of a school in Wolverhampton has been revealed following a police investigation.

West Midlands Police confirmed that the death of Neil Thompson, 45, was accidental.

“Our thoughts remain with his family who have been kept updated throughout,” said a police spokesman.

The 45-year-old was previously described by family as “a beautiful son, brother, father… and very much loved in the community of fishing.”

They added: “His love for life and funny stories touched the lives of so many people.”

Searches of the surrounding area and CCTV took place to establish his cause of death.

The police force also issued an appeal to find an e-bike he was riding from Aldersley area along the Smestow Canal at 1am.

West Midlands Police had already believed it was an accident during the appeal last month.

Last month, Detective Inspector Joe Davenport said: “The information we have does point, at this stage, to this as being an accident.

“However we want to be able to further establish this by locating the e-bike he had been seen riding in the hours before he died.”

The body was discovered at around 10.40am on Monday morning |

The bike was described as a Carrera Crossfire E Men’s Electric Hybrid Bike 2.0 – L Frame.

It is unclear if the e-bike was ever found.

The school was shut down the day he was found, with emergency services arriving at the school at 10.40am on Monday.

According to local media reports, the body was found on the edge of the grounds by an 11-year-old girl who was heading outside to take part in PE.

The school shut at 1pm, with parents urged to collect their children.

Smestow Academy, which educates children aged 11 to 18, was able to re-open the next day.

A school spokesman confirmed that assemblies for pupils about the incident were given throughout the morning.

They added that if a child had been affected, specialist support would be provided.
