A 21-year-old man has died following a two-vehicle crash outside Cookstown, County Tyrone.

Police said that shortly after 06:45 BST on Friday, they received a report of a collision involving a Seat Leon and a Volkswagen Bora on the Pomeroy Road.

They said the male driver of one of the vehicles died at the scene.

A woman was also transferred to hospital for treatment for her injuries.

Two ambulances and an air ambulance were sent to the scene.

Democratic Unionist party (DUP) councillor Eva Cahoon said the community in the Cookstown area “are in a sense of shock and sadness following this fatal accident”.

“This is devastating news and my immediate thoughts and prayers are with the family in this time of heartbreak and sorrow.”

Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) councillor Trevor Wilson said it was “dreadful to hear of another tragedy on our roads”.

“My thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic incident,” he added.

The Pomeroy Road has since reopened.
