A man injured in the grounds of a National Trust estate died from “severe chest injuries” after being trampled by cattle, an inquest has heard.

John Orton, 78, a retired telecommunications engineer, died at Felbrigg Hall, near Cromer in Norfolk on 13 July.

Assistant coroner for Norfolk, Maeve Sykes, opened an inquest into his death at Norfolk Coroner’s Court on Friday and said a post-mortem examination gave a provisional cause of death as “severe chest injuries”.

A National Trust spokesperson said: “We have been left shocked and deeply saddened by the death of a visitor who was seriously injured while walking at Felbrigg last month.”

On 13 July, Norfolk Police were called to the estate at about 11:45 BST and said despite efforts to save him, Orton died at the scene.

Following the incident, the estate was closed while inquiries were carried out.
