A man has been charged in connection with the death of a nine-year-old girl in Arbroath.

Officers were called to the Elliot Industrial Estate shortly after midnight on Sunday following reports that the child, from West Yorkshire, had been found injured.

She was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee alongside four other people, but later died as a result of her injuries.

Police said a 35-year-old white British man, who was known to the girl, had been arrested. He has now been charged and is scheduled to appear at Forfar Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

Det Insp Mike Ness, of Police Scotland’s major investigation team, said no-one else was being sought in connection with the incident.

He said the girl’s family members, who were camping in the area, were being supported by specialist officers.

Det Insp Ness added: “Our thoughts remain with those affected by these events.

“A police presence will remain in the area while our enquiries continue.”
