A man has been arrested after a bulldozer was driven into a village pub during opening hours, destroying the front porch and damaging the outside walls.

Police were called just after 20:45 GMT on Thursday, after reports that a JCB had driven over an unoccupied parked car and crashed into the New Inn, in the hamlet of Cefn Rhigos, Rhondda Cynon Taf.

A 35-year-old man, from Rhigos, was arrested on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm (GBH), dangerous driving, criminal damage and driving under the influence. Police said he was in hospital.

No one else was injured and police said they were “actively investigating the circumstances” surrounding the incident.

South Wales Police said it believed the incident “may have been targeted, rather than random”, and said it was not looking for anyone else.

Locals reported seeing a JCB vehicle being driven away from the pub shortly before 21:00 yesterday evening.

The police thanked members of the public for their support throughout the incident “which was swiftly brought under control”.

Officers stressed that there was no ongoing risk to the public.

A section of Rhigos Road has been closed and a police cordon is in place.
