An 18-year-old man has been arrested after a shooting in Trafford, Greater Manchester.

He was detained on suspicion of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder after a 21-year-old man was shot on Higher Road in Urmston on 16 January.

The victim is being treated in hospital, where he remains in a “stable but critical condition”, police said.

Detective Chief Inspector Justin Bryant said the suspect remains in custody after officers executed five warrants in the early hours of 19 January, adding: “We will not accept this level of violence on our streets.”

“We have been doing significant work to identify and arrest anyone who we believe is involved in this incident,” DCI Bryant said.

“And we will not stop until we have explored every possible avenue to ascertain why this happened and arrest those responsible.

“Over the past four years – between 2021 and 2025 – we have been able to suppress gun crime and shootings across Greater Manchester by 52%.

“But the work is not done, we will relentlessly pursue, arrest and prosecute anyone who thinks they are above the law.

“I would like to thank the community for their patience and assistance during this investigation, I have heard and understood their worries and concerns, and I would like to reassure them that this is a target attack with no wider threat.”

He added: “The public can rest assured that whilst officers continue pursuing lines of enquiry in relation to this incident, colleagues from neighbourhood policing teams will be supporting our ongoing activity and will continue with high-visibility reassurance patrols in the local area over the coming days.”
