Makerfield residents have delivered their verdict on newly elected MP Andy Burnham.

Speaking to GB News National Reporter Jack Carson, locals offered a mixed reaction to the outgoing Manchester Mayor, with one Briton declaring he is “not for the working man”.

Speaking at a victory rally in Makerfield, the newly elected MP declared it is the Labour Government’s “last chance for change”.

He said: “We’ve been on a path for 40 years that simply hasn’t worked for people and places in this part of the world, and this now is the change moment.

“That is the main thing I think we need in this country right now, for people to feel a sense of hope that there is something better to work towards on the horizon.”

Asked whether Mr Burnham should challenge Sir Keir Starmer for the Labour leadership, one local admitted that he “likes both of them”.

He told GB News: “I’m not sure that he should, but if he does, I’ll be made up for him if he gets it. But I like Keir as well.”

Another voter defended Makerfield’s new MP, denying that he would “abandon” the constituency for a shot at moving into No10.

He said: “No, I don’t think he would. Hopefully he wouldn’t.

“Because you look at the bigger picture, if he does get Prime Minister, he might do more for Ashton. You don’t know really.

“But I don’t get Keir Starmer. I don’t get him at all. He’s got no personality, he’s nothing to me.”

Taking aim at the current Prime Minister, one resident told GB News that Keir Starmer is “not the right man” for the job.

He said: “He’s got no talent for the job. He’s a nice man, I don’t dislike him as a person, but I don’t think he’s right for the job.”

One voter expressed frustration at Mr Burnham’s victory, arguing that another Labour win means “more left-wing gruel” being “dished up” for Britain.

He fumed: “He’s going to dish up more of the porridge, the gruel, which is left wing gruel, which doesn’t work.

“It just clearly doesn’t work, especially in this digital day and age where you can just move money abroad at the touch of a button.

“We’ve tried all this in the 70s, it didn’t work. It ruined Liverpool, and basically he’s not for the working man.”

In contrast, another voter heaped praise on the outgoing mayor following his win, telling GB News he is “very pleased” with the result.

He said: “I’m very, very pleased that he has won.

“I think he’s the right sort of man for the area to look after the North West and Makerfield, because the North West has been neglected by Parliament over the years.”
