Drivers are facing traffic chaos this morning after a serious accident on the A1M, which has left two people hospitalised.

The A1M in County Durham has been closed in both directions between J62 (Durham) and J63 (Chester le Street) due to a serious collision last night.

National Highways outlined that police are undertaking formal collision investigations at the scene of the accident.

The transport organisation’s officers are assisting with traffic management, although it is unclear how long this will take.

It added: “Due to the nature of the incident, the road is expected to remain closed into the morning.”

Traffic maps from National Highways show the road closed between J62 and J63, with adjoining roads also facing slow-moving traffic and delays.

Posting on social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, National Highways: North-East outlined that the A1M remained closed as police continue their investigations.

It added that there were delays of up to 22 minutes and three miles of congestion in both directions.
