Britons love a Sunday roast dinner, and gravy is the star of the plate for many — in fact, new research found 94 per cent won’t sit down to a roast without it.

But it goes much beyond pouring over turkey and Yorkshire puddings, as Britons share the most unusual ways they enjoy the condiment — including on cereal or pasta.

This is according to research by Aldi. The supermarket developed the first Great British Gravy Map, which goes into some of the UK’s regional gravy habits.

Close to 13 million jars of gravy have been sold in Aldi over the past two years alone, and nearly a quarter said they would secretly judge someone who doesn’t love it.

What’s more, 44 per cent said running out of gravy is the worst thing that could happen at the dinner table, and named it more disastrous than running out of roast potatoes or meat.

As part of the Great British Gravy Map, Aldi split the country into five shades and strengths:

Level 1 (Pale Cream/Light Golden Tan): Londoners favour the nation’s lightest, most delicate pour
·Level 2 (Warm Amber/Light-Medium Brown): Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland stick to a classic, smooth warm amber finish
·Level 3 (Classic Medium Brown): The Midlands takes the middle ground with a traditional, medium-rich brown
·Level 4 (Rich Chestnut/Deep Brown): The South East & South West demand a richer, darker chestnut hue
·Level 5 (Deep Espresso/Charcoal Brown): The North takes top spot for strength, insisting on a pitch-black, spoon-standing-up thickness

The regional differences don’t stop at colour and consistency, according to the research. Over in Liverpool, 35 per cent of locals said they could happily drink a full mug of gravy on its own.

Nearly one in five Edinburgh residents love it so much they would have a gravy fountain at their wedding, which is certainly one way to make the big day memorable.

A third of Welsh residents said they pack gravy in their suitcase when heading off on holiday, while 31 per cent of those in Birmingham bring their own homemade batch along to a pub or restaurant, just in case what is served is not to their liking.

More unusual habits can be found in Bristol, where more than one in 10 people secretly stir beer or ale into their gravy for a boozy twist.

Beyond the Sunday roast, Britons shared their favourite meals to add gravy to.

  1. Bangers and Mash (65%)
  2. Chips (61%)
  3. Toad in the Hole (51%)
  4. Shepherd’s Pie (50%)
  5. Cottage Pie (49%)
  6. Steak (42%)
  7. Casserole (31%)
  8. Meatballs (28%)
  9. Pies & Pastries (18%)
  10. Sausage Rolls (18%)

Some adventurous people have taken things even further. Indeed, seven per cent pour it on pasta, three per cent on pizza, and two per cent of those surveyed have even tried it on cereal.

Chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, Julie Ashfield, said: “Gravy sits at the heart of British home cooking, and our research shows every region has its own take on the perfect pour. Whether shoppers prefer it light and golden or dark and thick, Aldi’s Quixo range delivers great taste at unbeatable value.”
