A beloved Essex lollipop lady has been honoured by the King for her nearly three decades of keeping schoolchildren safe on the roads.
Joan Barfield, 78, from Stanway, received a British Empire Medal in the 2026 King’s New Year Honours for her outstanding contribution to the Colchester community.
The dedicated school crossing patrol officer has spent 29 years guiding children and their parents safely to and from school each day.
For almost 25 of those years, Ms Barfield has been a familiar face at Fordham All Saints Primary School near Colchester.
It is a remarkable achievement for someone who has made road safety her life’s work and become a reassuring presence for countless families over the years.
Testimonials gathered from parents and staff at the school helped secure her well-deserved recognition.
Ms Barfield was thrilled but caught off guard by the honour.
“I’m incredibly honoured to receive this award – it really came as a surprise,” she said.

“Supporting children and families to get to and from school safely has always been a privilege, and it’s so rewarding to work with the parents, staff and pupils who make every day so special.”
Based on the testimonies from locals, Ms Barfield has clearly built deep connections with the school community over her years of service.
Beyond her work at the crossing, she is also a devoted family woman.
She has four children, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

The nomination for her medal came from one of her own children, who took the time to collect heartfelt testimonials from parents and teachers at Fordham All Saints Primary School.
Ms Barfield will receive her British Empire Medal in person at a spring ceremony, where the Lord Lieutenant of Essex, Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst, will present the honour.
Essex County Council has expressed immense pride in Joan’s achievement.
