Lidl has rolled out a fresh rewards scheme today that gives shoppers another way to cut their grocery bills.

The new Lidl Plus Points allows customers to accumulate points every time they make a purchase in store.

These points can then be exchanged for coupons through a marketplace within the Lidl Plus app, offering discounts on hundreds of products.

The scheme went live on May 5, and was developed after the supermarket gathered feedback from its customers, who said they wanted greater flexibility in choosing their own rewards.

Lidl Plus users will earn one point for every £1 spent in store. These points can then be converted into coupons for free products, or as money of a shop.

Shoppers can use their points to claim money-off vouchers for their weekly shop or swap them for specific items available through the app.

The rewards programme builds on existing features within Lidl Plus, which already offers personalised coupons, Lidl Pay and Click, Reserve, Collect services.

To help customers get started straight away, Lidl is giving 100 free points to both new and existing app users.

These bonus points can be redeemed immediately for free treats such as cheese twists, bananas or chocolate digestives.

The supermarket is also running a double points promotion on all fruit purchases from today until 22nd May.

This means shoppers stocking up on fresh produce will collect points at twice the normal rate during this period.

The combination of free introductory points and the fruit promotion gives families a quick way to build up rewards during the first few weeks of the scheme.

The points are valid for two years and are replacing rewards for reaching monthly spending thresholds.

Points earned through regular shopping trips can be converted into money-off coupons or exchanged for products from the app’s marketplace.

Whether customers prefer discounts on their overall basket or want to claim specific free items, the system lets them decide how to use what they have earned.

To mark the launch, Lidl has teamed up with pop group Liberty X to record a new version of one of their classic songs.

The track, titled ‘Just a Lidl’, celebrates the various ways customers can save money through the app and will be available to stream from 7th May.

An accompanying music video shows the band members dancing through store aisles and features several celebrity cameos.

Louise Weise, Chief Customer Officer at Lidl GB, said: “At Lidl, our core purpose has always been to deliver value to our customers, providing a seamless shopping experience without compromising on quality or the savings shoppers know and love.”

She added: “We’ve done a big piece of work to listen to customers and it was clear from the feedback that they wanted more freedom to decide the rewards that suit them.”

The new points system represents the latest addition to the Lidl Plus app, which the retailer describes as a natural progression of its customer-focused approach.
