Shoppers were left shocked when a car went up in flames at a Lidl car park in Nottinghamshire causing a mighty response from local fire crews.

Footage shows firefighters with hoses frantically tackling the blaze tearing through the vehicle in Beeston, Nottinghamshire, at 5pm on Monday.

The car, which the fire service said was “modified”, can be seen abandoned on the tarmac away from the other vehicles.

The boot appears to be open, and the door falls off as sparks fly, with thick plumes of dark smoke pouring into the sky as shoppers watch on from a distance.

An onlooker took to social media and said: “Not sure what kind of car that was, but almost burnt down the building next door. Good to see no one was hurt.”

Luckily no one was injured as the flames stretched across the busy car park, although some cars nearby were also damaged from the intense heat, with some drivers not being able to return to their vehicle until Tuesday morning – blocked by the remains until the site was cleared.

One resident said on social media: “We were there shopping and had to wait an hour before we could go to the car.”

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the Lidl just after 5pm.

Firefighters scrambled to the scene and were seen extinguishing the blaze on site, but it had swiftly torn through the car, leaving only a charred shell behind.

Only the bottom of the car and the tyres remained after the fire was extinguished.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service explained that the car “seemed to have been modified by the owner” and was “well alight” when crews arrived at the scene.

They said: “The fire was out by around 5.30pm, and before leaving the scene crews spoke with the Lidl staff – the car remained in a cordon.

“Neighbouring vehicles in the car park had heat damage.”

Two cars impacted by the ferocious flames remained in the car park overnight, with visible signs of damage including number plates melted off.

It is understood that Lidl remained open for business during the ordeal.
