White post boxes have been introduced at cemeteries across Cheshire to give people a way to stay connected with loved ones who have died.
The Letters to Loved Ones scheme collects letters and returns the messages to the cemetery grounds through composting.
They would neither be opened nor read and would be handled with complete confidentiality, said Cheshire East Council.
“Grief is a deeply personal experience and we recognise that many people find comfort in continuing their connection with those they have lost,” said councillor David Jefferay.
He said the authority had received a positive response to the initiative and he hoped it would bring comfort to those who used it.
“[It] provides a simple but meaningful outlet for remembrance, reflection and expression,” he added.
Visitors can write messages to those they have lost, share memories, mark milestones and continue a conversation by posting letters in the specially-designed boxes.
They can be found at Crewe Cemetery and Meadow Brook in Crewe, as well as cemeteries in Sandbach, Nantwich, Alderley Edge, Wilmslow, Congleton and Macclesfield.
Another is due to be installed at Weston Cemetery near Crewe soon.
