A Labour MP was grilled by GB News host Martin Daubney following Keir Starmer’s crunch meeting with his party.

Speaking to the People’s Channel, Catherine Atkinson claimed the meeting saw a “resounding sound of united MPs” in support of the Prime Minister.

Following mounting pressure on Sir Keir to resign, the Labour leader met with his MPs in Parliament this evening.

Pressed on what happened in the room, Ms Atkinson told the People’s Channel: “You will know that the Parliamentary Labour Party meetings that happen every week, we’re not supposed to talk about what was said.

“But what all of those journalists that are stood outside that you mentioned, what all of them will have seen is an absolutely packed room, so packed that they stopped letting people in.”

She added: “And what they will have heard was the resounding sound of hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of Labour parliamentarians united in support of our Prime Minister.”

Hitting back at Ms Atkinson, Martin argued: “Because if you aren’t in support, then you may have to face the electorate?

“You may have a leader coming in who’s going to tack to the left, which the electorate never voted for. And if you face the music, you’d be obliterated?!”

The Labour MP responded: “I think that all of us were elected 18 months ago in order to deliver change for the country, and it is absolutely essential that that is the focus. And it’s the stability that we have seen with this Prime Minister that has meant we’ve been able to bring inflation down.

“We’ve been able to see six interest rate cuts, which means that people’s mortgages are a little easier.

“It means we’ve been able to freeze and freeze not only things like prescription charges and train fares in order to try and tackle the cost of living, but we’ve also been able to lift half a million children out of poverty. We need to continue to deliver change because that is what people want to see.”

Interjecting Ms Atkinson, Martin stated: “There has been a lot of change, you’ve changed director of communication four times, 11 ministers have changed, including the Deputy Prime Minister.

“The corruption minister has been changed over allegations of corruption, the Homelessness Minister has been changed because they are a dodgy landlord, the Transport Minister was all change because of a fraud charge – this is a Government defined by the precise chaos that you said you turn the page on?!”

Ms Atkinson assured GB News viewers: “I think today we have seen statements of support from all of the Cabinet and the overwhelming majority of Labour MPs reject the Conservative chaos that we saw. That is why it’s absolutely essential that we see that focus on delivery. That is the change that people need to see, and it is certainly not in this country’s interest to see further changes of leader, as we saw under the Conservatives.

“It’s not good for the economy, it’s not good for our international reputation, and it’s certainly not the stability that people are crying out for. I think that Keir Starmer has been able to turn the tables.”

She added: “And the tarnished international reputation that we saw after Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, we need that leadership, not just for our country, but on the international stage where we know that things are so uncertain.

“And I’m really pleased that we are seeing those waiting lists coming down, seeing that focus on the cost of living and seeing that economic stability so that we’re in a position to ensure that people are better off.”

Admiring the Labour MP’s “loyalty to the party”, Martin hit back: “When your head hits that pillow at night, you must know that we have the least popular Prime Minister in history.

“Popularity polls going downhill faster than the British bobsleigh team. Come on, people don’t buy this anymore. You promise an end to the chaos, we’ve got more chaos?”

Ms Atkinson said: “What matters to me is the changes, that is what I’m thinking about when my head hits that pillow. They want to see more neighbourhood police. That is what they are seeing.

“They want to see regeneration in our city. That is what they are seeing. They want to know that when they need to see a doctor that they can. There is still a long way to go, but what my focus is, is ensuring that we are taking steps in the right direction. That is what is essential.

“I think it certainly keeps journalists interested when they think that there are going to be stories like that, but that is just not, in my view, the focus of this government. Just last week, we saw millions being dedicated to children who have cancer to ensure that they can get to medical appointments.

“We saw thousands more schools who are rolling out breakfast clubs, and we saw the lifting of half a million children out of poverty. It is those kinds of changes that we need to continue to see, so that people feel the delivery that has been so, so fought for.”
