Martin Daubney delivered a brutal slapdown of a Labour MP after he attempted to shift blame onto the old Tory Government despite having been in power for almost 20 months.

Since being handed the keys to No10 on July 4, 2024, Sir Keir Starmer’s MPs alike have attempted to shake off their unpopular decision by citing the “terrible inheritance” their successors left in their wake.

But, when faced with plummeting polling for the Government, Rugby MP John Slinger reverted to his party’s apparent tendency to dodge blame.

The latest YouGov data has indicated Labour is sitting on around 70 per cent disapproval, only beaten by Liz Truss’s brief stint in Downing Street at around 77 per cent.

“Your approval ratings are going downhill faster than the British Winter Olympics team,” the GB News star quipped.

Mr Slinger responded: “Polls are a snapshot of a moment in time. You referred to Liz Truss, who actually wrecked the economy, whereas what the Government that I’m proud to be part of has done is improving our economy.

“I’m very confident that the Government, as I said, I’m proud to be part of, is turning the corner and we’re taking the really difficult decisions that are getting our economy back on track after many, many years.

He even praised Labour for cutting interest rates – a decision which is independently decided by the Bank of England.

The Rugby MP said he was ‘proud’ to be part of a Government whose unpopularity has only been beaten by that of Liz Truss

“We all know that’s not a Labour victory or indeed any political party’s a victory,” Martin said, shutting down the claim.

Nevertheless, the GB News star put to him: “Let’s talk about some of the figures yesterday. A record lack of vacancies for people, particularly young people, at a six-year-low.

“The worst situation since the pandemic, unemployment at approaching 5.5 per cent, record levels since the pandemic… You promised to be the party of working people.

“There are fewer working people because of National Insurance hikes, minimum wage hikes.”

The MP admitted Britain was not the land of ‘milk and honey’

He added the latest revelation, which claims Britain is “one step away” from civil unrest due to food shortages.

“You promised change. This is change,” Martin said.

The MP responded: “I’m not going to sit here on your programme and claim that everything’s the land of milk and honey.

“Of course not. Absolutely not. We inherited a terrible situation and we are putting it right. But we are making progress. We’re moving in the right direction.”

However, his comeback appeared to irk Martin, who said: “John… John, you can’t keep blaming the Tories forever.

“Come on, you’ve been in power now for 17 or 18 months! You can’t keep saying we inherited a terrible decision.

“You’re in power. The buck stops with you.

“By the way, if that rosy picture you painted there, of all the improvements and the whole what you’re doing is precipitating the worst approval rating since Liz Truss – maybe it’s time for another U-turn.”

Meanwhile, Mr Slinger argued it is “absolutely fine” for Governments to fall under “intense scrutiny, pressure and criticism”.
