A Labour MP has said that Sir Keir Starmer “satisfied a lot of people in Westminster” and has blamed the vetting process for the appointment of Peter Mandelson.

Speaking on GB News, Perran Moon also said the situation was “completely different” to that of Boris Johnson: “I totally disagree [that the Prime Minister has a bad day.] He promised he would come to the chamber and explain all of the events that led up to the situation we found ourselves in.

“He’s done that today. He has satisfied a lot of people in Westminster.

“He apologised, as he has done right the way through this from the start. He’s also recognised that at the heart of this, and we must never forget, are victims of a paedophile, Jeffrey Epstein.

“It was rock solid performance today, answered a lot of queries, and we move on from here.

“Well, he’s already apologised several times for appointing Peter Mandelson. He did it again today. It was a mistake. We are completely changing the process by which Mandelson was allowed to take up the role despite failing vettings.

“It’s a process we’ve inherited, and we’re changing it.

“He’s apologised for, most importantly, appointing Mandelson in the first place. Now we have to make the changes that we need to make to this process. He’s made that commitment.

“We’ve appointed Sir Andrew Fulford to review this entire process. We’ve got to clean up the process that has allowed a civil servant to withhold information, absolutely vital information. This was really essential information.

“And the Prime Minister said today that had he been in possession of all the facts he would not have appointed Mandelson.

“He has apologised for the appointment of Peter Mandelson. It was a mistake. He’s been very, very clear about that.

“We’ve got a completely different situation with Boris Johnson. The circumstances were completely different. The Prime Minister has set up a review process. We’re focused on changing that process, but we’re also focused on priorities of the vast majority of people, which are to reduce the cost of living, make sure that we’re dealing with the fuel crisis and the heating crisis.

“They are the priorities of people, we’re getting on with the job.

“I’m absolutely confident of everything the Prime Minister has said today. He made it very, very clear of the information that was made available to him at each point in the process.

“He made it very clear that that he felt that had he been party to all the information he should have done and look, ultimately, at the end of this, this is a situation where ministers were not given all of the facts that they needed to have in order to appoint this, which is why we need to review that process and get it changed.”
