“Because you have raised income tax on rents and interests, and at the end of the day, landlords and savers are working people, aren’t they?”

Ms Reynolds assured: “We have not broken the manifesto, because the manifesto committed to not increasing the income tax rate, VAT or National Insurance on employees, and we haven’t broken the manifesto in this budget.”

Camilla then hit back, grilling Ms Reynolds a second time: “No, you said on working people. So there was a debate about the previous Budgets raised by Rachel Reeves breaching the manifesto, because they put up National Insurance for employers who could be classed as working people.

“And it’s the same argument here, isn’t it? If you raise income tax on rents and interest, you’re actually raising income tax on landlords and savers. Landlords and savers are working people as well, aren’t they?”
