A Labour minister has demanded a General Election if Sir Keir Starmer is ousted as Prime Minister.
Migration Minister Mike Tapp has said the plan would “stop the constant churn” as speculation over the future of Sir Keir Starmer rumbles on.
Mr Tapp won his Dover and Deal constituency at the 2024 General Election, beating Reform UK’s Howard Cox with a majority of 7,559 votes.
Now, Mr Tapp, who is currently predicted to lose his Kent seat to Nigel Farage’s party, said his proposed policy would “focus minds”.
Mr Tapp said: “Is it time to legislate; if a change of leader is forced by its own Party then a General Election must be called.
“That would stop the constant churn and focus all politicians on delivery, instead of work place politics. These endless ‘house of cards’ games would end and the country would benefit. Let’s legislate to focus minds.”
However, former Labour MP for Hull East Karl Turner hit back, saying: “It’s a Parliamentary democracy, Mike. We don’t elect Prime Ministers.
“Let’s start by legislating to force by-elections when self-serving shysters cross the floor to improve their chances of being re-elected. They’ve crossed to us and vice versa. Shysters no matter the party they go to.”

Also critical of Mr Tapp was Josh Fenton-Glynn, the Labour MP for Calder Valley, who added: “Mike Tapp appears surprised that we are a parliamentary democracy!
“The last two prime ministers to win an election then lose their job at the next election were Major and Wilson.
“Course correction midterm in response to the public is the norm, not the exception.”
However, Reform UK’s London Mayoral Candidate Laila Cunningham agreed with the Labour minister, telling GB News: “I think we should go to the public…that is what the people require.”

Pr3esident Donald Trump has said Sir Keir Starmer will resign, in a social media post accusing the UK Prime Minister of failing with his immigration and energy policy.
The US President’s comments come as Sir Keir spends the weekend reflecting on whether to fight or step down amid mounting calls for him to set out a timetable.
Writing on his Truth Social platform, President Trump said : “Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of The United Kingdom.
“He failed badly on two very important subjects, IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well! President DJT.”

The UK Prime Minister’s initially friendly relationship with the US president has soured significantly in recent months.
Tensions have continued simmering over Sir Keir’s refusal to allow US forces to use RAF bases in the initial wave of attacks against Iran.
Last week, Sir Keir announced a social media ban for under-16s after Mr Trump’s pro-tech US administration warned against such a move.
