Girona have been relegated from La Liga just a season after playing in the Champions League.

The Catalans, who finished third two seasons ago, needed to win to stay up but were held to a 1-1 draw by Elche.

Mallorca are also down despite a 3-0 win over bottom side Real Oviedo that saw them finish on 42 points, level with Osasuna and Levante.

However, Mallorca were consigned to the second tier after losing the head-to-head tiebreaker between the three clubs.

Champions Barcelona were beaten 3-1 at Valencia but it was not enough for Carlos Corberan’s side to sneak into the European places.

Sixth place and a Europa League spot went to Celta Vigo after their 1-0 win over Sevilla, while Getafe’s 1-0 win over Osasuna helped them finish seventh and claim Conference League qualification.

Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe were both on target as Real Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao 4-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu in Dani Carvajal’s 451st and final appearance for the club.
