A Buckingham Palace spokesman has addressed how King Charles handles Royal Family disputes playing out in public, while also undertaking important constitutional roles as Head of State and Head of the Commonwealth.
The King has undertaken an extensive autumn tour across the Caribbean region this past week, carrying out a series of high-profile engagements.
This has included official Royal Visits to the Commonwealth realms of The Bahamas and Antigua and Barbuda, alongside an official State Visit to Guyana.
It comes as King Charles has balanced extensive international diplomacy with ongoing controversy surrounding the Duchess of Sussex’s father, Thomas Markle Sr.
Mr Markle Sr. is the subject of active criminal and police watchdog investigations involving allegations of child sexual abuse material.
Meghan released a statement expressing that she is “deeply distressed” by the allegations, noting that a 2019 letter shown to her by the Metropolitan Police was the reason she cut off contact with her father and kept her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, away.
Mr Markle Sr. has strongly denied all allegations, calling them “sick lies” and claiming he is being set up.
A spokesman for Buckingham Palace has explained how the King manages his dual responsibilities during periods of public focus on internal family dynamics.
He told GB News: “Busy people get lots done. The King rigorously prioritises his multiple roles, as Head of State, church, Commonwealth, military and family.
“The order of priority shifts by the day – and often by the hour.”
The spokesman for the King expanded on whether the royal household remains confident in its handling of domestic and family issues as public perceptions continue to evolve.
When asked if His Majesty is confident that his approach to family matters is the right one, in terms of public attitudes towards the institution, the spokesman said: “Yes. That is why he takes the actions he does – and has done.”
LATEST ROYAL DEVELOPMENTS
When asked if the King had been in touch with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex since Meghan’s statement about her father, Buckingham Palace declined to comment.
King Charles’s international tour commenced with a solo leg in The Bahamas, where the monarch remains head of state.
During the stopover, the King held bilateral discussions with the local leadership, including prime Ministerial talks, while addressing historical matters and regional priorities.
Following the engagements in The Bahamas, the monarch travelled alone to Guyana for a two-day State Visit.
The stop marked a significant diplomatic leg of the trip, complete with formal state receptions alongside Guyana’s president and official delegations.
The King will soon be joined by Queen Camilla in Antigua and Barbuda for the final portion of the tour and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
The joint engagements across Antigua and Barbuda will encompass diplomatic gatherings, meetings with regional leaders, and public community events scheduled in connection with the biennial Commonwealth summit.
