King Charles faces a high-stakes test of his monarchy as he embarks on his latest major tour of the Commonwealth, with a former royal butler warning the trip carries significant risks for the Head of State.

The King and Queen Camilla are currently en route to commence a 10,000-mile, nine-day Autumn Tour of the Caribbean.

The itinerary includes official visits to The Bahamas, a historic state visit to Guyana, and a trip to Antigua and Barbuda, where the King is scheduled to attend the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Chogm).

The 2026 overseas trip comes against a backdrop of heightened political tension across the region, where debates around republicanism, constitutional reform, and calls for formal apologies and financial reparations for historical transatlantic slavery continue to dominate the local political agenda.

The monarch’s arrival in the Caribbean inevitably draws direct comparisons to Prince William and Catherine’s highly controversial tour of the region in March 2022.

That eight-day trip to Belize, Jamaica, and the Bahamas faced widespread public protests, optics backlash, and intense constitutional pushback.

During that 2022 visit, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness delivered a blunt message directly to Prince William and Catherine during a formal bilateral meeting, declaring to their faces in front of television cameras that Jamaica was “moving on” to fulfil its destiny as an independent republic and cut ties with the British Crown.

The fallout from the 2022 tour accelerated discussions across several Caribbean realm nations regarding the removal of the British monarch as their head of state.

Speaking exclusively to GB News on behalf of Press Box PR, former royal butler Grant Harrold highlighted the immense pressure surrounding King Charles’s current journey and drew comparisons between the King and the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Grant Harrold told GB News: “There is no doubt that William and Catherine are very popular amongst the public, undoubtedly more so than the King.

“Unfortunately, there is every possibility that this trip will be less of a success in comparison to William and Catherine’s 2022 tour – so in that respect this tour is a bit of a risk.

“There is a lot of discussion and debate around this trip, which is leading to a lot of pressure on the King and Queen to pull it off.

LATEST ROYAL DEVELOPMENTS

“It would be great if it was successful; however, I don’t think that this will be an easy trip.

“He has his work cut out for him on this tour, and if he does pull this off, he will essentially save the Commonwealth for the time being, but I am just not sure he will be able to do so.”

Mr Harrold also noted the contrast in approach between the monarch and his heir as the Royal Family navigates evolving expectations around the Commonwealth’s future.

He said: “William and Catherine have always been trying to shift the royals to a more modern approach, as opposed to the traditional royal expectations.

“In his last tour, Prince William suggested that the Commonwealth could be led by a non-royal eventually, so it will be interesting to see how the King navigates this trip.”
