King Charles held audiences with Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis and Governor General Dame Cynthia Pratt on Wednesday, who serves as his official representative in the island nation.

The monarch filled his second day in the Bahamas with a series of high-level engagements across the capital, Nassau, as part of his nine-day Caribbean royal tour.

The packed schedule came a day after Charles opened his visit on Tuesday by addressing young Bahamians at the very location where the country declared its independence from Britain.

His tour takes place against a backdrop of intensifying demands from Caribbean states for reparations over the transatlantic slave trade.

While in Nassau, Charles met relatives of the four Royal Bahamas Defence Force marines who lost their lives when Cuban MiG fighter jets attacked and sank HMBS Flamingo in May 1980.

The incident occurred following a confrontation over illegal fishing in Bahamian waters.

The King also paid his respects at the RBDF headquarters, where he laid a wreath at the monument erected in honour of the fallen servicemen.

The solemn engagement marked one of the most poignant moments of his second day on the island, underscoring the historical military ties between the Crown and the Caribbean nation.

The visit unfolds amid growing pressure from Caribbean nations urging Britain to apologise for its role in the slave trade and to pay reparations.

On his first day, Charles acknowledged the “great suffering of the past” and confirmed that Commonwealth leaders would address slavery’s legacy at a major summit the following week, which he is set to open.

Speaking at the youth celebration event, the King described Bahamian culture as “born out of darkness”, a striking choice of words at a venue steeped in the country’s post-colonial history.

His remarks signalled a willingness to engage with the region’s most sensitive historical grievances.

LATEST ROYAL DEVELOPMENTS:

Charles rounded off his busy day in Nassau with a garden reception hosted at Government House, designed to celebrate Bahamians who have distinguished themselves through voluntary work, public service and charitable endeavours.

The guest list also included former Prime Ministers of the Bahamas, alongside sitting members of the national cabinet.

The reception offered the King an opportunity to engage with a broad cross-section of the country’s civic leaders and community figures, capping a day that blended solemn commemoration with diplomatic dialogue and public celebration.

It was the final engagement before Charles continues his wider Caribbean itinerary.
