King Charles and Queen Camilla are set to conclude their remarkably triumphant four-day American state visit today with a journey to Virginia, where they will participate in celebrations marking 250 years of US independence.

The royal couple will attend a community block party featuring food and entertainment as America commemorates the anniversary of its founding.

During his address to Congress earlier in the tour, the King paid tribute to the nation’s founders, describing them as “bold and imaginative rebels with a cause.”

The visit represents the monarch’s inaugural trip to the United States since ascending to the throne, and has been widely credited with strengthening diplomatic ties between Britain and the Trump administration following a period of strained relations.

The King’s itinerary for the day includes a visit to one of America’s national parks, where he will engage with members of a local indigenous community and meet individuals working on conservation projects and environmental protection efforts.

Queen Camilla will undertake a separate engagement at a farm, where the focus will be on showcasing the American horse racing industry and its longstanding connections with British equestrian traditions.

The split programme reflects both royals’ individual interests, with Charles’s well-documented passion for environmental causes and Camilla’s known love of horses and racing.

These final engagements cap off what has been described as a hugely successful diplomatic mission, with the couple having navigated a packed schedule across multiple American cities since arriving earlier this week.

The tour’s highlights have included a star-studded charity gala at Christie’s auction house in New York on Wednesday evening, where supporters of the King’s Trust gathered to celebrate the organisation’s work.

Anna Wintour, Lionel Richie, Katherine Jenkins, Karlie Kloss, Donatella Versace and Stella McCartney were among the famous faces in attendance.

Earlier that day, the royal couple laid flowers at the September 11 memorial, leaving a message declaring their “enduring solidarity with the American people” in honour of those who perished nearly 25 years ago.

The King’s speech to Congress on Tuesday drew particular acclaim, with The New York Times noting that “beneath King Charles’s jokes and decorum, some subtle rebuttals to Trump” as he addressed themes including Ukraine, environmental threats and the rule of law.

Lionel Richie, who serves as the King’s Trust’s first global ambassador, offered warm praise for the monarch following his Congressional address.

“I thought it was brilliant and how he threaded the needle so brilliant, but brought us back into humanity as only he can do,” the singer remarked, describing Charles as “a friend, giving advice as to what we should be doing – a wise friend.”

At the Christie’s reception, the King himself displayed characteristic self-deprecating humour, telling guests: “I hesitate to make another speech because I may have had enough.”

He also reflected on his age with a light touch, joking that “as we look to the future, I won’t see the long-distance future” while encouraging attendees to “champion the next generation.”
