The King and Queen have said a formal farewell to the Sultan of Oman at Windsor Castle after hosting him for the first day of a three-day State Visit at the request of the British Government.

It comes after King Charles and Queen Camilla welcomed Sultan Haitham to Windsor for a traditional carriage procession in the early afternoon, followed by a glitzy banquet in the evening.

The King and Queen will subsequently head up to Aberfan to mark the 60th anniversary of the tragedy that killed 116 children and 28 adults.

Charles said his goodbyes to Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al Said at the Sovereign’s Entrance of the royal residence.

The monarch was joined by the Queen, who shook the Sultan’s hand and told him: “Goodbye. I hope you have a good journey back.”

Rain continued to fall on Windsor, soaking a small contingent of soldiers who stood guard on the lawn in the castle quadrangle for the Omani leader’s departure.

Last night’s glittering state banquet for the Sultan was slightly overshadowed by the Duke of Sussex’s latest interview.

Harry told GQ Magazine that he “wants it to work out” with his family, but claimed that others “don’t want to”.

The Sultan, who stayed at the castle overnight, will later meet Prime Minister Andy Burnham for talks in Downing Street.

Meanwhile, the King, Queen and Prince of Wales will join politicians, survivors and bereaved families in remembering the 116 children and 28 adults killed in the Aberfan disaster as people come together to mark the 60th anniversary.

An entire generation was almost wiped out when 150,000 tonnes of coal waste slid down the hillside before engulfing Pantglas Junior School on October 21, 1966.

The disaster unfolded, following days of heavy rain, when excavated mining debris from the Merthyr Vale Colliery was dislodged and came thundering down the hillside.

LATEST ROYAL DEVELOPMENTS

The waste material had been piled high on the side of Mynydd Merthyr, above Aberfan, for years, even though there were numerous underground springs below.

Children in Pantglas Junior School were just getting ready for lessons when 1.5 million cubic feet of liquefied slurry crashed into the school and a number of nearby houses.

About half the children from the junior school died in the tragedy, which happened on the last day before half term.

Charles, Camilla and William will visit the Aberfan Memorial Garden, which is located on the site of the junior school, and the nearby Aberfan and Merthyr Vale Community Centre.
