Actress Keira Knightley has addressed the backlash surrounding her involvement in Audible’s forthcoming Harry Potter audio series, responding to questions about boycott movements connected to author JK Rowling’s views on transgender matters.

The 40-year-old performer spoke publicly about her participation in the project during a recent interview, acknowledging the ongoing debate surrounding Ms Rowling’s statements on gender ideology.

The Harry Potter creator has faced sustained criticism over several years for her positions on transgender issues, leading some fans to call for boycotts of related projects.

Ms Knightley’s comments come as the highly anticipated audio adaptation prepares for release, with the full-cast production set to feature numerous acclaimed British actors bringing the beloved wizarding world to life through voice performances.

The Oscar-nominated actress will portray the villainous Professor Umbridge in the comprehensive audio production, which promises to deliver all seven novels from the wizarding series.

The ambitious project is scheduled to launch in November 2025 and conclude in May 2026.

The star-studded ensemble includes Kit Harington, Ruth Wilson, and James McAvoy amongst a roster of more than 100 voice performers.

Each book will receive the full dramatic treatment, with the extensive cast bringing multiple characters to life across the beloved fantasy saga.

The audio series represents one of the most significant adaptations of Ms Rowling’s work in recent years, arriving at a time when the franchise continues to generate both enthusiasm and controversy amongst audiences worldwide.

When questioned about the boycott campaigns during her conversation with Decider, Ms Knightley revealed she had been completely unaware of such movements when she agreed to participate in the project. “I was not aware of that, no,” the actress stated in the interview.

Despite her initial unawareness of the boycott, Ms Knightley offered a measured perspective on navigating contemporary social divisions. “You know, I think we’re all living in a period of time right now where we’re all going to have to figure out how to live together, aren’t we?” she told Decider.

The actress acknowledged the existence of strongly opposed viewpoints in society, suggesting that finding common ground remains essential.
