“The manager would like to thank everyone for their kind wishes and comments over the last 24 hours.

“The club would ask that his privacy, and that of his family, is respected at this time.

“We do not intend to provide any further medical detail and will issue an update when appropriate.”

United have one point after three Premiership matches, while Saturday’s opponents are yet to register a point this term after two games.

Sharp had said on Friday: “He is OK. I spoke to him last night and I spoke to him again this morning and he was in good spirits.

“I don’t really know much to be honest. I just asked him how he was and he just said they took him in yesterday and he felt unwell and they are keeping him in for observation.”
