Jermaine Jenas made his first television appearance since being dismissed by the BBC, sitting down with Good Morning Britain presenters this morning to discuss the scandal that ended his broadcasting career.

The 43-year-old former England midfielder was let go from his positions on Match of the Day and The One Show in August 2024 following complaints about messages he sent to female colleagues.

Speaking to hosts Ranvir Singh and Kate Garraway, Jenas stated: “I’ve lost everything, essentially. My job, my family, everything was kind of taken away from me.”

His marriage to Ellie Penfold collapsed months after his departure from the BBC, ending their 16-year relationship.

The ex-pundit described the past two years as an extremely challenging period for himself and his loved ones.

When pressed by Ms Singh about whether he had apologised to the women who received his unwanted messages, Mr Jenas maintained he had always expressed remorse to those involved.

“I’ve always apologised to everybody that was involved in it, whether it was the women who I was messaging and who were messaging me,” he said.

However, he noted that he was never given the chance to apologise directly to the complainants, citing duty of care considerations around the situation.

The former Tottenham player acknowledged his position of authority at the BBC played a significant role in the misconduct.

“I was in a position of power in my role, in my job, and it was something that I shouldn’t have been doing,” Mr Jenas admitted, adding that above all, he owed his wife an apology.

The interview grew tense when Ms Singh suggested Mr Jenas was avoiding the core issues, prompting a sharp response from the former broadcaster.

“I’m not skirting around anything, Ranvir. I’m more than happy to have the conversation, which is why I’m here,” he insisted.

Mr Jenas pushed back against the line of questioning, stating: “I know what I did was wrong and accept the punishments, so nobody’s skirting around the responsibility of what I did.”

When Ms Singh asked him to offer guidance to other men in positions of power, he declined, saying he was not there to dictate to others.

The exchange escalated further when Mr Jenas challenged the presenter directly: “And if you feel like I’ve not been punished enough, then go ahead and keep going.”

The interview sparked a wave of criticism on social media, with viewers questioning why Mr Jenas had chosen to appear on television at all.

One user wrote that his “attempt to show he is available for work hasn’t gone well,” whilst another suggested the former presenter “probably wishes he’d stayed in bed now.”

“Perhaps Jermaine Jenas should simply tell other men not to do what he did rather than saying he’s not here to tell others what to do. #gmb,” another posted.

Someone else added: “Who the hell thought it would be a good idea for Jermaine to do that interview? To some, his actions are minor. But, we have to remember to think about the victims’ feelings. We all see & feel things differently & we’re allowed to have those feelings. @GMB #GMB.”

Another wrote: “That interview was awful, it was best Jermaine hadn’t done it. More rudeness than accountability shown #gmb.”

“Jermaine isn’t coming across well. He’s coming across as defensive when he doesn’t need to #gmb,” someone else echoed.

However, others expressed sympathy for Mr Jenas, with one adding: “@GMB @kategarraway @RanveerOfficial felt for Jermaine jenas today – not a fan of Ranvir Singh – think she was a bit unfair today #gmb #ranvirsingh #kategarraway #jermainjenas.” (sic)
