Jeremy Clarkson’s pub The Farmer’s Dog has urged visitors to leave their canine companions at home during the current heatwave gripping Britain.

The establishment posted an update on Instagram explaining that with temperatures approaching 35°C and minimal shade available on site, it would be kinder for pets to remain somewhere cool and comfortable.

“We love them. The clue is in the name. Normally they’re always welcome,” the pub stated.

“But with very little shade on site and temperatures nudging towards 35°C and beyond, today might be a good day for them to stay somewhere cool and comfortable instead.”

The venue, which typically welcomes dogs, acknowledged the unusual circumstances brought about by conditions more commonly associated with southern Spain.

The heatwave has also forced the temporary closure of Chops, the pub’s butcher’s counter, with staff battling to keep refrigeration units functioning in the extreme conditions.

According to the Instagram post, the combination of soaring temperatures, cooling equipment and the venue’s tent structure has created significant difficulties.

“We’re working on solutions and will reopen as soon as it’s sensible to do so,” the update explained, noting the closure could extend through the remainder of the week.

Visitors need not go entirely without meat products, however, as the pub confirmed its popular sausage rolls would continue to be served from both the garden bars and main pub bar.

The nearby Diddly Squat farm shop and Hops remain operational, though some tills have been repositioned to help staff cope with the challenging conditions.

The warning comes as Mr Clarkson continues his recovery from a series of health challenges that have prompted significant changes to his daily routine.

The 66-year-old presenter revealed last week that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer in May 2025, though the disease was caught early.

Following high-intensity focused ultrasound treatment to target the tumour, a PSA test conducted two months ago showed no signs of the disease, confirming he is now in remission.

The former Top Gear host has since embraced a dramatically different approach to life, telling The Sunday Times: “I drive much more slowly. I’m a bit of a dawdler. I go for walks a lot. I have vegetarian food.”

This marks a notable shift for someone who previously dismissed alternative diets as “utter madness.”

The broadcaster’s determination to transform his habits stems from a deeply personal motivation: his grandchildren.

His eldest daughter Emily has two children with husband Alex Andrew – three-year-old Arlo and one-year-old Xanthe – and Mr Clarkson has made clear that spending time with them is now his priority.

“I really like seeing my grandchildren. I want to watch them grow up,” he told The Sunday Times.

His health troubles extended beyond the cancer diagnosis.

In 2024, he underwent a heart procedure after experiencing a sudden decline in his condition, requiring a stent to be fitted.

Complications arose when he resumed blood-thinning medication without medical advice following his cancer operation, leading to what he described as “a very big emergency in the middle of the night.”
