James Middleton delivered a poignant tribute to his elder sister Catherine following her completion of the Three Peaks Challenge on Sunday evening.

When the Prince and Princess of Wales’s official social media account shared Catherine’s statement about finishing the gruelling feat, her brother responded with a comment that carried deep significance.

He posted simply a mountain emoji alongside a red heart – the identical symbols he had used more than two years earlier when Catherine first revealed her cancer diagnosis.

This understated gesture demonstrated that the father-of-one had fulfilled the promise he made to stand by his sister through her health battle.

The original message from Mr Middleton appeared on Instagram on March 22, 2024, shortly after the Princess of Wales made public her cancer diagnosis.

Accompanying the post was a photograph showing the siblings together during their childhood years. His heartfelt caption read: “Over the years, we have climbed many mountains together. As a family, we will climb this one with you too.”

The mountain and heart emojis that followed those words would later reappear in his response to Catherine’s triumphant completion of the physical challenge, transforming what began as a metaphor about facing adversity into a celebration of literal peaks conquered.

Mr Middleton was present in person to welcome Catherine as she descended from Snowdon, the final peak of her remarkable endeavour.

The 44-year-old princess was met by a gathering of her closest family members at the Welsh finish line.

Her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, had travelled to witness the moment, as had the Prince of Wales and the couple’s three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

The reunion marked an emotional conclusion to Catherine’s solo challenge, with those dearest to her assembled to celebrate the future queen’s achievement.

Catherine tackled Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon within a 24-hour window, beginning her ascent on Saturday evening.

The challenge saw her cover 23 miles on foot with a total climb exceeding 10,000 feet, while travelling 462 miles by road between the three peaks.

Kensington Palace confirmed she is believed to be the first royal to accomplish this feat.

In her accompanying statement, the princess explained she undertook the expedition “to give something back” and highlight the broader effects of serious illness.

She wrote: “Cancer doesn’t just affect the body. It changes how you think and feel and profoundly affects every aspect of life.”
