Hair loss is extremely common, with factors such as age, childbirth, illness, medication, poor hair care, hormonal imbalance, and scalp infection all possible causes. Hereditary hair loss (also known as androgenic alopecia) is the most typical cause worldwide.

Despite how widespread the condition is, gradual thinning or sudden shedding can be very disheartening, often resulting in shame and a loss of confidence.

But hope is not lost, as many forms of hair loss are reversible.

GB News spoke exclusively to Jamielynn De Leon, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Rogue House Salon, about how women can tackle the issue.

“After styling hair for more than 100 New York Fashion Week shows and treating thousands of clients, I’ve seen firsthand how devastating hair loss can be for women. The good news? Most cases are treatable with the right approach,” she stated.

According to Jamielynn, the primary triggers for women’s hair thinning include hormonal fluctuations during menopause, pregnancy and polycystic ovary syndrome, alongside genetic predisposition and chronic stress.

“Majorly overlooked” causes include iron deficiency, thyroid disorders and extreme dieting practices.

The expert identified minoxidil as the most reliable treatment option currently available for hair loss, describing it as “the gold standard”.

This NHS-approved medication has established itself as the primary solution for hereditary hair loss in women, offering hope to those struggling with thinning hair.

The medication requires twice-daily application for a minimum of four months before visible improvements emerge, according to guidance from Harley Street Hair Clinic.

Initial regrowth often appears as colourless strands that gradually develop into normal hair texture and shade with continued treatment.

Experts suggest the medication enhances blood vessel dilation near follicles, boosting nutrient delivery to encourage growth.

Starting treatment early proves crucial for optimal outcomes, and it’s important to note that if you stop using it, hair loss will recommence.

Minoxidil is widely recognised as an effective hair loss solution if you are consistent with it. Indeed, one woman revealed that she grew her hair back after severe thinning by using it “religiously”.

Aside from minoxidil, excellent hair care is key for growth. Jamielynn noted that while ageing does contribute to hair loss, excellent hair care can mitigate this.

“I have 60-year-old clients with fuller hair than some 30-year-olds because they prioritise hair health,” she said.

The hair guru also recommended daily five-minute scalp massages using rosemary or peppermint oil to boost circulation.

Revamping your hair-washing routine can also minimise hair loss. Jamielynn advised women to shampoo and condition just two or three times per week with sulphate-free products to prevent breakage. Meanwhile, silk pillowcases minimise friction-related damage.

As for diet, she stressed that because hair is 90 per cent protein, women should consume adequate amounts through lean meats, eggs, and legumes.

For optimal hair growth results, Jamielynn emphasised that “the key is consistency and patience,” noting that hair growth cycles require three to six months.

She concluded: “With the right combination of professional treatment and home care, most women see significant improvement.”

If you’re worried about hair loss, always consult your doctor or a dermatologist for tailored advice. While solutions such as minoxidil work for some, results cannot be guaranteed for everyone.
