Martha Stewart has taken aim at Meghan Markle’s professional evolution, describing the Duchess of Sussex’s shift across vastly different careers as lacking coherence.

In an interview published today, the 85-year-old lifestyle mogul cast doubt on whether such a path made sense.

“If you’re an actress, it’s hard to then transition to a princess and then from a princess into a homemaking guru on a television show,” Ms Stewart said. “It doesn’t sort of follow. So go from there.”

The pointed remarks were directed at Meghan’s Netflix cooking programme, With Love, Meghan, which has drawn repeated comparisons to Ms Stewart’s own long-established empire.

Ms Stewart also disclosed that she and Meghan had recently been guests at the same dinner party in California.

According to the lifestyle icon, the duchess had only just returned from a visit to Highgrove House when the two found themselves at the gathering.

Despite being at the same event, Ms Stewart indicated the pair barely exchanged words.

“I didn’t talk to her really more than to say a couple words, but I know she was talking about it,” she told People, referring to Meghan’s UK trip.

Ms Stewart also offered a glimpse into her own approach to social occasions, describing herself as someone her friends nickname “LIFO: last in, first out,” preferring to arrive just as guests sit down and depart shortly after dessert.

It is not the first time Ms Stewart has expressed reservations about Meghan’s credentials in the lifestyle arena.

In July last year, she told Yahoo Lifestyle that she did not know the duchess particularly well, adding: “I hope she knows what she’s talking about.”

On that occasion, Ms Stewart stressed the importance of authenticity, making clear that genuinely understanding one’s subject matter was essential for anyone operating in the space.

The comments came as Meghan was building out her commercial ventures beyond acting, a trajectory that has consistently attracted scrutiny from established figures in the homemaking industry.

Meghan’s Netflix series With Love, Meghan debuted on March 4, 2025 and ran for two seasons, featuring the duchess alongside various guests as they prepared dishes and shared entertaining tips.

However, the programme is not expected to be commissioned for a third run on the streaming platform.

Alongside the show, Meghan launched her lifestyle brand, As Ever, in 2025, further expanding her portfolio of post-royal ventures.

She and Prince Harry have pursued a range of professional projects since stepping back from royal duties in 2020 and relocating to the United States.
