Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has warned the UK risks becoming an “island of strangers” without a crackdown on immigration.
Labour unveiled its new immigration white paper yesterday aimed at “taking back control” of Britain’s borders and significantly reducing migration.
The Prime Minister pledged to end what he called a “one nation experiment in open borders” after net migration reached nearly 1 million in 2023.
“That’s not control. It’s chaos,” Starmer said in his announcement of the 80-page plan.
The white paper outlines comprehensive changes to the immigration system, with tighter controls across work, family and study routes.
Skill requirements will be raised to degree level, with English language requirements extended to all routes, including for dependents.
The time required to acquire settled status will be doubled from five to ten years.
