A 34-year-old Iranian man has been charged after allegedly attempting to break into a nuclear missile base, Police Scotland has confirmed.

The Iranian man was charged alongside a 31-year-old Romanian woman.

The pair were arrested at HM Naval Base Clyde, which is known as Faslane, on Thursday.

The Royal Navy had previously said two people had tried and failed to enter the base.

The suspects are scheduled to face Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Monday, where details of the charges against them will be confirmed.

In a statement, Police Scotland said: “Around 5pm on Thursday, March 19, 2026 we were made aware of two people attempting to enter HM Naval Base Clyde.

“A 34-year-old Iranian man and a 31-year-old Romanian woman have been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

“They are due to appear at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Monday, March 23.

“Inquiries are ongoing.”

The Faslane facility, situated on the Gare Loch roughly 25 miles north-west of Glasgow, serves as the operational base for the entirety of the Royal Navy’s nuclear-powered submarine fleet.

Among the vessels stationed there are four Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarines, which constitute the delivery system for Britain’s Trident nuclear arsenal.

The base additionally hosts Astute-class submarines, which operate on nuclear propulsion but carry conventional weaponry rather than nuclear armaments.

Dreadnought-class vessels are set to succeed the current Vanguard fleet from 2030 onwards.

A peace camp has been based outside the camp, which is a hotbed for anti-war protests, for over four decades.
