Michael Middleton, father of the Princess of Wales, marks his 77th birthday today, with Catherine expected to have joined family members in celebrating the milestone.
The Leeds-born businessman, who came into the world on June 23, 1949, holds a special place within the royal household as the maternal grandfather of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, children who occupy second, third, and fourth positions in the line of succession.
He memorably escorted his daughter down the aisle when she married Prince William on April 29, 2011, a moment watched by millions around the globe.
The birthday comes just days after Mr Middleton was spotted at Royal Ascot, where he attended Ladies’ Day on June 18 alongside his wife Carole.

The couple were captured on camera enjoying the prestigious racing event from the Royal Box, seated among distinguished company, including Andrew Parker Bowles and Prince Edward.
His presence at such high-profile royal occasions underscores the Middleton family’s integration into the fabric of royal life – a relationship that has strengthened considerably since Catherine’s marriage to the heir to the throne 15 years ago.
The family patriarch serves as a stabilising influence for the Wales household.
Before entering the world of royal connections, Mr Middleton built his career in aviation, training and working as a flight dispatcher for British Airways.

It was during his time with the airline that he encountered Carole, then employed as a cabin crew member – a meeting that would shape both their personal and professional futures.
The pair later ventured into business together when Mr Middleton joined Carole’s mail-order party supplies enterprise, Party Pieces, in 1989.
They transformed the company into a thriving family operation over the following decades, though it ultimately entered administration in May 2023 amid pandemic-related financial difficulties and cost-of-living pressures.
Prince William has long demonstrated a deep affection for his wife’s relatives, describing Catherine’s parents during their 2010 engagement interview as “really loving, caring, and really fun”.

Author Robert Hardman has noted that the prince was “insistent that his wife’s family be properly included” at significant royal occasions, making a “direct request” for both parents and siblings to participate in the King’s Coronation in 2023.
Prince George, who turns 13 next month, served as a Page of Honour at that ceremony while his grandparents watched proudly.
William maintains warm ties with Catherine’s siblings, Pippa Matthews and James Middleton.
